Mallow, Mauritania
Erect or sprawling biennial or perennial with hairy stems.  The blossoms are pink or purple with dark veins.  Large heart to kidney shaped leaves with 3-7 rounded, toothed lobes.  Flowers April-September.  By pinching back the tips, you will produce a shorter more compact plant.

Penstemon, Mersea Yellow
This unusual color variant was discovered in an English garden in 1980. Hundreds of soft yellow tubular flowers cover the plant for many weeks in  midsummer.  This plant does appreciate a little extra water, and can grow in lean and enriched soil as long as the drainage is good.

Penstemon, Pine Leaf
Pineleaf is an outstanding but often overlooked species from southern New Mexico and Arizona. Blooming for 6 to 8 weeks in midsummer, the tubular red flowers are profuse, attracting hummingbirds from miles around. As the plant matures, the stems become woody, forming an attractive evergreen shrublet, with bright green  needle-like foliage.

Penstemon, Scarlet Bugler
Scarlet Bugler has gray foliage and bright red flowers. Hummingbirds love this plant.  It can tolerate hot summer temperatures and winter temperatures. Scarlet Bugler likes full sun or part shade but will flower more in the sun.

Poker, Red Hot
A sturdy South African native known for its tough, easy to grow nature. It has long, grasslike foliage and bi-color flower spikes in shades of orange and yellow.

Poppy, California
Smaller yellow petals with orange centers are a typical variation during the summer. The same individual plants produce pure orange flowers in spring. It is an easy way to cover a desert landscaping area with bright yellow flowers.

Prairie Mallow, Party Girl
Known as a miniature Holly Hock.  The bright rose-pink flowers line the stiff stems for several months in late summer.  Easily grown and thrives in average soils and is not fazed by the August heat.

Rosemary, Creeping
Prostrate Rosemary is a low-spreading, evergreen shrub or groundcover. Its leaves are green, leathery and very aromatic. This Rosemary has pale-blue flowers from early to mid-summer. Creeping Rosemary will trail over walls or edge of a raised bed to make a curtain like effect, it can even be used in large mixed containers.

Salvia, Blue Hills

The Salvia “Blue Hills”  has growing purple stems loaded with true blue flowers that bloom from June to October.  With its gray-green aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long.  To increase bloom time, it should be cut back after the first bloom.

Salvia, Caradonna
The Salvia ‘Caradonna’ has glowing purple stems loaded with violet-purple flowers that bloom from June to October. With its gray-green aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long. To increase bloom time, it should be cut back after the first bloom. ‘Caradonna’ is a magnet for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and is deer-resistant.

Salvia, East Friesland
Tall 18” spikes of intense violet-blue flowers top gray-green foliage.  Dense, shrub-like growth.  Deciduous perennial.  Low maintenance.  Effective as an edging plant and good in containers.

Salvia, May Night
Outstanding for its compact growth habit, profuse deep purple flower spikes and vigorous re-blooming nature. "May Night" thrives in hot sunny planting sites.  The first flush of flowers comes in late spring. Deadheading and a little extra watering assures heavy re-blooming.

Sedum, Autumn Joy
Once you have gone through the fall with "Autumn Joy" in your garden, you wonder how you ever lived without it. Not what you typically think of as a Sedum, this tall upright variety blooms with large flower heads that start pink and age gracefully to a rich bronze.  Nice as a dried everlasting flower.

Sedum, Dragon's Blood
A fast-growing ground cover with brilliant red flowers in late summer. Succulent, needle-like leaves turn vibrant orange-red in fall. The more  sun it gets, the more intense both the flowers and foliage become.

Sedum, Neon
Intense deep-pink flower clusters will light up your fall garden like no other. Deer will eat the blossoms. A nice compact growth habit for one of the taller of the sedum family.

Snow in Summer
A sure-to-please ground cover that grows easily in any well-drained soil, and spreads quickly by reseeding itself. Fragrant white flowers by the thousands highlight Snow-in-Summer in late spring. Shear off the faded flowers to maintain a tidy mat of fuzzy white leaves for the rest of the growing season.
