Grasses


Feather Grass
In summer, plants are covered with masses of elegant pale feathery seed-heads which are held a little about the foliage.  These can be cut and dried when first opened for use in winter arrangements indoors.

Feather Reed, Karl Foerster
A very upright clump forming grass that is easy to grow in full sun and average soil.  Use this one where you want a strong vertical shape as a backdrop or an accent. 'Karl Foerster' may bend and sway in wind and rain but will always find its way back upright.

Fescue, Elijah Blue
Festuca, also known as Blue Fescue, is attractive all year as a foliage plant. It retains a neat mounded form, unless planted too closely. Trim dried foliage before new growth begins in the spring.

Fountaingrass, Hameln
An attractive ornamental grass which makes a compact, densely tufted clump of dark green leaves, that turn yellow in autumn.  From mid-summer to autumn, it bears bristly, greenish white flower spikes that mature to grey-brown.  This grass looks good from months on end and needs very little attention.  Just remove the dead leaves in spring.

Fountaingrass, Karly Rose
Fountain Grass is a graceful, elegant ornamental grass with smokey rose-purple plumes.  Flowers June to frost.  Hardy and new plumes are continuously displayed all summer long and gently sway in the slightest breeze.

Maiden Grass
Maiden grass bears coppery tassels as a seed-head in early fall, eventually growing lighter in color and adorning the plant as a plume.  Provides visual interest even in winter.

Muhly Grass
This plant becomes a spectacular haze of dusky pink in the fall when it blooms.  Adapted to a wide range of soil types in well drained situations.

Pampasgrass, Hardy
Very sturdy, ornamental, perennial grass.  In the fall produces 2 ft. long, silvery, silky plumes above the blades.  Bloom color in shades of brown, orange and purple.  Can be dried for indoor arrangements.  Cut back previous season’s dry or dead leaves before new growth starts in the Spring.

Pennisetium, Little Bunny

Fountain grass is one of the most suitable grasses for the home landscape offering three seasons of interest. It is versatile and dependable with a graceful fountain-like form. The flower heads of fountain grass are attractive in fresh and dried flower arrangements.  Little Bunny is the dwarf form of the fountain grass.

Zebra Grass
Wide green leaves with irregularly spaced yellow horizontal bands.   Forms dense clumps of variegated foliage.  This grass can be used as a scree or looks great by a pond.  Attracts birds and butterflies.

Bishops Weed
Spreading groundcover with small white flowers in late spring to early summer.  Prized mostly for it’s variegated leaves.  Does best in shade.

Juniper, Wiltoni
Very low, creeping, silver-blue Juniper. The outstanding color lasts all winter. One of the most popular groundcover Junipers. Great for bank plantings or trailing over walls or down slopes.

Thyme, Elfin Creeping
Evergreen Perennial  used as an ornamental fragrance. Miniature lavender blossoms on a bed of rich green. Excellent as a thyme “lawn” or between pieces of flagstone

Thyme, Wooly
A fine low maintenance variety with tiny felted gray leaves; it rarely flowers. Looks good all season, and is one we suggest for high traffic areas. A favorite between flagstones or mixed into a thyme lawn to contrast with green-leaved varieties. Evergreen foliage. Rarely flowers.

Vinca Minor

A short evergreen perennial groundcover with small spring-blue flowers and glossy leaves. Spreads many feet and has thin, wiry stems. Performs best in evenly-drained, moist soils, but is adaptable to soils of average fertility, soils of various PH, and occasional drought. It is winter hardy. Flowers intermittently from April to September.

Winter Creeper, Purpleleaf

Outstanding evergreen ground cover for light to heavy shade. Attractive deep green or colorfully variegated leaves often become even more colorful in winter. Very hardy and easy to grow

Honeysuckle, Arnold Red

Profuse flower display and brilliant show of fruit each year. Darkest red blossom of any Honesuckle. Fragrant flowers in May followed by large bright red berries through June-July.

Ivy, English

Actually classified as a high climbing shrub it is clinging vine with aerial rootlets to anchor it! There are many leaf forms, most of which have 3 to 5 lobes. Leaves may be widely different shades of green or have striking yellow or white variegation. Because it roots easily in water, it is one of the longest lasting elements of greenery in floral arrangements. Also because it is slow to wilt and usually in plentiful supply, it’s ideal to cut for fresh greenery swags

Silver Lace

A great, fast-growing vine that reminds you of clematis but is much less picky; will grow in sun or shade! A great fence covering with attractive mid-green foliage, it has long erect clusters of fragrant white flowers in summer.

Trumpet Vine, Madame Galen
Summer foliage is dark green. Trumpet-shaped flowers range from yellow to orange to red and bloom in summer. Trumpet Creeper is a rampant, native, deciduous vine that climbs by both aerial rootlets and twining stems.   Useful for rustic effects on fences, posts, and walls.

Virginia Creeper, Englemanii
Attractive climbing deciduous vine with clusters of small whitish or greenish flowers from May through July.  They turn a beautiful red in the fall, tendrils on vines ending in clinging disks which will climb on anything.  This vine will also produce black to dark blue berries in July and August that persist into the fall.   This plant can be used very effectively as a ground cover.

Winter Jasmine

Winter Jasmine is one of the most beautiful winter-flowering shrubs. It flowers on naked green stems before the new season’s leaves emerge.  Jasmine begins blooming in early March and continues into April.
