Webster's Dictionary defines xeric as "characterized by, relating to, or requiring only a small amount of moisture <a xeric habitat> <a xeric plant>" and xeriscape as "used for a water-conserving method of landscaping in arid or semiarid climates". |

In New Mexico, xeriscaping has been a way of life for centuries. Early settlers, like the Anasazi over 10,000 year ago, were dependant upon agriculture. Even then, water was at a premium in the southwest and in most cases had to be carried to the crops. Can you imagine climbing 400' down from your cliff dwelling, filling your basket with water and climbing 600' straight up to the mesa where your squash is growing? |

The Spanish brought European religion, science and new plant varieties to New Mexico. The plants they brought had been successfully grown in the deserts of Mexico both for food and for decoration. But once again, water was scarce and the plants that did well were xeric plants. |

Modern settlers brought the sprinkler system and lawns. When our rainfall was average or above, beautiful landscapes were created and maintainable. But drought and water restrictions have devastated most of our lawns and plantings. Sure, we will see an end to this drought but when? And in New Mexico the next one can't be too far in the future. |

Xeriscaped gardens are a beautiful blend of colorful plants, stone and decorative mulches. A unique piece of wood or garden art may be added to enhance the garden. Paths, patios and benches can be added to make the garden an outdoor living space.
